Rarity is a number, not a vibe.
Every rare names list online will tell you a name is unusual. Almost none will tell you how unusual. So you fall in love with something a blog swears is a hidden gem, and three years later there are two of her in the class.
Here is the honest version. In the official US Social Security Administration records, a name is genuinely rare once it sits past rank 3,500. That is fewer than 1 in 37,000 baby girls. In our catalog, 1,252 girl names clear that line. This page sorts them the way I would for my own shortlist: by how rare they actually are, and how easy they are to live with.

What rare actually means (and the number nobody shows you)
Popularity is public. The records list every name given to at least five US babies, every year, for over a century. So rare is measurable, and you never have to guess. Olivia, the number one girl name, goes on roughly 1 in 118 birth certificates. A name at rank 3,500 goes on about 1 in 37,000. Same country, same year, two completely different worlds.
So when we say rare, we mean that second world: past rank 3,500, rarer than about 1 in 37,000 baby girls. Not "feels underused." Measured.
The sweet spot: rare, but not a lifelong spelling lesson (ranks 500 to 3,500)
The rarest name is not always the best one. A name past rank 4,500 can be so unusual she spends her life spelling it at coffee counters. The names most parents actually want live one step up: uncommon enough to feel chosen, familiar enough that a teacher can say it on the first try. Every name here peaked years ago, so it is settling, not quietly surging.

The true rarities (the deep end, for when you mean it)
Past rank 4,300, you are into names given to only a few hundred girls a year in the whole country, rarer than about 1 in 47,000. Most are old European names that simply fell asleep. They are beautiful, and they are a commitment: she will almost never meet another, and she will correct a few forms along the way. Worth it, if that is the trade you want.

Bringer of victory, a classical name of the Egyptian courts.
All gifts, the mythic first woman.
Simply life. Two syllables, about 1 in 50,000.

The trap: rare names that are actually climbing fast
A lot of the names Reddit and Pinterest file under rare and unique are the opposite: top-100 names surging right now. They still feel undiscovered because the wave is young. Check the trajectory, not just the impression. A baby given one of these today will grow up surrounded by them.
Dawn. Top 15 and still rising. Lovely, but not rare.

Uncommon does not have to mean hard. These names clear the rank-3,500 line, run short, and carry cleanly across languages, so she gets the "I have never met one" without the lifetime of spelling it out loud.

Before you commit, run the name you love against the records. Not a blog's opinion of it. The actual rank and trajectory: where it sits today, and which way it is heading. A name at rank 300 and climbing will not feel rare by the time she is in school. A name past 3,500 and settled will. That gap is the difference between choosing on a hunch and choosing on purpose.

Often no. Many popular rare and unique picks online are top-100 names that are climbing fast, like Aurora at rank 15 or Maeve at 76, both peaking right now. They feel undiscovered because the wave is young. The only way to know is to check the current rank and the trajectory, not the label.
How do I check if a specific name is rare?▾
Look up its official SSA rank and, just as important, which direction it is moving. A settled name past rank 3,500 will stay uncommon. A low-ranked name that is climbing will not. Lucky Names shows both for any name, from the real records.
